Improved defence to see Watford challenge for play-offs

Tightening up their defence may be all that it takes for Watford to mount a serious challenge of gaining promotion back to the Premier League.

Watford have spent the past five seasons in the Championship after their Premier League relegation and it is certainly not a shortage of goals that has held them back from a quick return to the top flight.

In the last five Championship seasons, Watford have finished in the top six on three occasions in terms of the goals scored table.

However, they have only actually made the play-offs on one of these occasions.

Therefore, the main two areas in which Watford need to make some improvement is in keeping clean sheets and in winning their home games against teams positioned towards the foot of the table.

In the past four seasons, Watford have shut out the opposition in less than a quarter of their games, whilst they have always been towards the bottom of the table based on goals conceded.

Meanwhile, home wins against the weaker teams in the league is largely seen as essential to be leading challengers towards the top of the table.

But Watford have largely struggled in this department in the last five seasons, always losing at least two games at Vicarage Road against the teams in the lower half.

The loss of England under-21 international striker Marvin Sordell to Bolton will not aid any promotion ambitions, but with the club now under new Italian ownership, a wave of promising loan signings this summer will improve the Hornets’ hopes of making the playoffs.
