Six Nations History

The 2008 Six Nations tournament will be the nightth contest since Italy joined the competition back in 2000. The European Rugby Union competition actually began in 1910 and was known as the Five Nations until this time. During World War II, France did not compete and the competition reverted back to the Home Countries, which had been in force between 1883 and 1909.

Six Nations Competition - Recent Years

England proudly hold the most victories in the competition, having triumphed 25 times in total. However, in recent years, the ‘Three Lions’ have been distinctively average and Brian Ashton’s side go into this year’s competition looking to end a three-year barren spell.

Six Nations - 2008 England Challenges

England’s main challengers for the 2008 crown will be France and Ireland. Brian O’Driscoll and co will be looking to claim the European Rugby Union title for the men in green for the first time since 1985, while Bernard Laporte’s strong physical side are sure to be there or thereabouts.

Since winning the ‘Grand Slam’ in 2005, Wales have been pretty disappointing but, with players like Gavin Henson at their disposal, do not underestimate them. Meanwhile, Scotland, who won the last ever Five Nations tournament in 1999, will be desperate to retain the Calcutta Cup after defeating England 18-12 last time out. Italy’s search for a first ever Six Nations title looks set to continue.
