Six Nations Championship

It is that time of year again when the cream of European Rugby Union fight it out in the Six Nations tournament. The Six Nations Rugby Championship is contested annually between England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy over five weekends in February and March.

The tournament was, up until seven years ago, known simply as the Five Nations, but Italy’s inclusion in the competition in 2000 led to the birth of the Six Nations. England hold the record for winning the Six Nations Championship the most, having triumphed 25 times, while last year’s champions France have 15 victories to their name. This year’s favourites Ireland have won it 10 times, whilst Wales have 23 victories and Scotland 14. Italy are still searching for their first title. six nations championship

If a country manages to win every single game then they are referred to as ’Grand Slam’ winners. The last team to win a ‘Grand Slam’ was Wales two years ago and England hold the record for most wins with 12. In total, only four teams have won the ‘Grand Slam’ title since Six Nations Rugby Union began.
