Toughest challenge yet to keep up with noisy neighbours

With David de Gea now settled in after a shaky start, Manchester United may have a better chance of reclaiming the Premier League title.

The 2011/2012 season saw the Premier League decided on goal difference for the first time, with Manchester City prevailing by eight goals.

Manchester United’s defence has been the lynchpin of their Premier League titles – topping the defensive table in nine of their 12 title winning seasons – and last season only City bettered them defensively.

Meanwhile, United remain a force away from home as well as at Old Trafford, and were the division’s most impressive side on their travels last season, winning 13 from 19 matches on the road.

Attacking wise, Manchester United were also impressive, scoring an average of 2.34 goals per game, which far exceeds their 2.05 average when they were crowned champions in 2011.

Now, with City having raised the bar in claiming a first ever Premier League title, United need to step their game up to re-affirm their dominance in Manchester.

Sir Alex Ferguson will be as inspired as ever to ensure that happens in the coming season.
