Home form must improve to land top six spot

Had the Premier League table been based purely on home form in Kenny Dalglish’s first full season in charge, the Reds would have finished in twelfth place.

While the Liverpool fans reflect on their shortcomings last season, it’s clear that Liverpool must improve their performances against sides in the bottom half of the table if King Kenny and his merry men are to break back into the top six.

Thanks to a board that is willing to back the manager, Liverpool have invested heavily in improving the squad over the past 12 months and the introduction of Kenny Dalglish at the helm initially revitalised the club, seeing them land their first silverware in six years.

Of the 18 games Dalgish took charge of in the 2010/11 Premier League season, Liverpool came away with 33 points from a possible 54 at an average of 1.83 points per game.

In 2011/2012 though, the Anfield club averaged a measly 1.36 points per game, with only 27 of their 52 points coming on home soil.

Having finished 17 points off fourth-placed Tottenham last season, you could argue that Liverpool have a lot of ground to make up, but only five sides took more points off teams in the top half of the table than Liverpool did last season.

If Dalglish wants to challenge for the top four then he has to improve Liverpool’s record against the teams in the bottom half, having taken just 28 points from a possible 60 last season.

Whilst Carling Cup success was welcome this past year, Liverpool fans are desperate for Champions League football to return to Anfield sooner rather than later.
