The 2010 World Cup in South Africa may not have been the most exciting tournament in the history of the competition, but it once again showed that you can do a lot worse than backing the favourites in the Football World Cup odds.

Things looked like going wrong straight away for the Spaniards who lost their opening game against Switzerland.

That was just the latest instance in which a team amongst the favourites has won the title.
In fact, the closest thing we’ve had to a shock winner in recent years was when Italy claimed the title in 2006 – and even they were relatively short at the start of the tournament.
Of the eight teams to win the tournament, five of them have won it more than once and Spain would become the sixth if they retained their title in 2014.
