A promising novice season over the big fences means that Finian’s Rainbow could be one of the horses to take particular note of now that he will contest the biggest races over 2m. His progression up the hurdles ranks led initial trainer Adrian Maguire to compare the horse to the mighty Denman in terms of his future prospects and although he is unlikely to follow Denman in featuring in the Cheltenham Gold Cup odds, the Queen Mother Champion Chase is a realistic prospect.

Finian’s Rainbow has done little wrong in his career, although he is still waiting for a first victory at the Cheltenham Festival. In his first run he finished fifth in the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle when arguably not seeing out the 2m5f trip. Then last season he ran with credit in the Arkle when second to Captain Chris.

Given that he wins the lion’s share of his races elsewhere, there are certainly question marks over whether the extra demands of Cheltenham suit the horse. However, now that he is arguably in the peak of his career, he has the chance to prove any doubters wrong.

Although Sizing Europe is rightly the ante-post favourite Queen Mother Champion Chase odds, Finian’s Rainbow has the speed and slick jumping to lay down a strong challenge. However, he is prone to getting a bit low at some fences, which could have big consequences if it causes him to fall. The lack of up and coming chasers over 2m means that it may become a two-horse race, unless it is decided to run Captain Chris in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, instead of stepping him up in distance to either the Ryanair Chase or even the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
