New boss must improve attack to rekindle title challenge

Despite boasting £153m worth of attacking talent, Chelsea continue to be plagued by a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal over the course of a season.

Chelsea began the season second favourites behind Manchester United in the 2011/2012 Premier League title odds, but Andre Villas-Boas’ doomed tenure sucked the life out of any potential title bid.

The 2010-2011 season saw Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea side muster 69 Premier League goals at an average of 1.82 goals per game but this was bettered by both Arsenal and Manchester United.

Last season meanwhile, the Blues notched 65 league goals, a tally trumped by the two aforementioned sides, along with Tottenham and eventual champions Manchester City.

In all three of Chelsea’s title winning seasons they have averaged 1.89 goals per game and topped the Premier League’s attacking stats on all but one of those three Premier League wins.

Fernando Torres has continued to struggle in front of goal at Stamford Bridge, scoring just seven league goals in one and a half seasons at the club, though he is not solely to blame for the Blues’ bluntness in the final third.

What should be highlighted is Chelsea’s failure to score in 24% of their Premier League games in 2010/2011, and 21% of outings last season.

If you compare this with 3% in the 2009/10 season, 16% in the 2005/06 season and 13% in the 2004/2005 season, it’s easy to see where Roberto Di Matteo needs to improve his side.

Participation in the Champions League final and FA Cup success eventually represented an impressive season for Chelsea, but they must sharpen their golascoring instincts this season if they are to mount another Premier League title challenge.
